• I welcome a wide range of manuscripts, including picture books, middle-grade fiction, short stories, novellas, graphic novels and young adult novels.

  •  I offer a close reading of text, keeping in mind the story the writer wants and needs to tell.  I believe that every word and every line counts.

  • I give detailed critiques that include an analysis of theme and structure, plot and character development as well as hands-on line by line, word by word edits.
  •  I view authors and editors as partners with the shared goal of making each story as well told as it can possibly be.
  • When requested to do so, I give guidance with query letters and synopses.
  • I offer a follow up phone session with each author.

NEW: This Fall I’ll be offering a series of 6 writing workshops sponsored by New York Writer’s Workshop at the JCC, 334 Amsterdam Avenue on Wednesday evenings: Every Wednesday Oct 17, 24, 31, Nov. 7  (Skip Nov. 14 and 21) Nov 28 and Dec 5. Time: 6:30pm to 9:00 pm. If you have a story to tell whether that story is a children's picture book, a middle-grade or YA novel, a short story, a memoir, or a piece of flash fiction, this workshop will help you discover the heart of your tale and the narrative structure best suited to your voice and intention. In a supportive environment, participants will share their texts with their fellow writers and with the instructor. Detailed individual critiques, line edits and notes will be offered along with class discussion, prompts and published examples of fine storytelling. Email a one- to three-page writing sample or synopsis of your novel  or picture book in progress to lgbasswebsite@gmail.com. Once approved, please call the JCC at 646.505.5708 to register.

"I loved Laura Geringer Bass's writing workshop at the JCC so much that I've already taken it twice and will sign up again. With grace, humor, kindness, insight and a lot of inspiring prompts, she helps students through the creative process, greatly improving our work along the way. Her wisdom and guidance helped me sell the book I worked on in her workshop to a topnotch publisher. I can't wait to work with her again!” —Joanna Cotler, artist and picture book author
